What feeds the index

Crypto fear and greed indices are composite scores: several market measurements, each capturing a different symptom of fear or greed, are normalised and combined into one number. The original and most widely cited methodology, published by Alternative.me, uses six inputs with the weights below. Other publishers, including CoinMarketCap, use a similar mix of volatility, momentum, positioning and social data with their own weightings.

InputWeightWhat it measures
Volatility25%Current volatility and maximum drawdowns of Bitcoin against 30 and 90-day averages. Unusual volatility reads as fear.
Momentum and volume25%Current volume and momentum against 30 and 90-day averages. High buying volume in a rising market reads as greed.
Social media15%Post counts, engagement and interaction rates for crypto hashtags. Unusually high interaction reads as greed.
Surveys15%Weekly crypto polls. This input has been paused by the publisher for an extended period.
Bitcoin dominance10%Bitcoin's share of total crypto market cap. Rising dominance reads as fear (flight to the safest asset); falling dominance as greed.
Search trends10%Google Trends data for Bitcoin-related searches, especially the volume and wording of related queries.

How traders use it

The index is a contrarian tool. The behaviour it measures - panic selling, euphoric buying, social media frenzy - is the behaviour of the crowd, and the crowd is usually most wrong at the extremes. That gives two practical uses:

  • Extreme fearAppears after sharp declines, when leveraged longs have been liquidated and sellers are exhausted. Historically a better zone to accumulate than to capitulate. Look for confirmation in falling open interest, which shows the forced selling is done.
  • Extreme greedAppears after strong rallies when leverage is high and everyone is already long. A reason to tighten stops, take partial profit and avoid chasing - especially when the funding rate is elevated at the same time.

What it is not is a timing signal. The index can sit in Greed for weeks during a trend and in Fear for months during a bear market. Use it to size and manage risk in proportion to how crowded the trade is, not to pick tops and bottoms on its own.

Fear and Greed Index FAQ

What is the Crypto Fear and Greed Index?

It is a daily sentiment score from 0 to 100 for the crypto market, weighted heavily towards Bitcoin. 0 means extreme fear and 100 means extreme greed. It compresses several inputs - volatility, momentum and volume, social media activity, Bitcoin dominance and search trends - into a single number that is easy to compare over time.

What do the classifications mean?

On this page, 0-19 is Extreme fear, 20-39 is Fear, 40-59 is Neutral, 60-79 is Greed and 80-100 is Extreme greed. Other publishers draw the lines slightly differently. The boundaries are conventions rather than statistical thresholds, so a reading of 79 and one of 81 describe almost the same mood.

How do traders use the Fear and Greed Index?

Mostly as a contrarian gauge. Extreme fear tends to appear after sharp sell-offs, when forced sellers are exhausted, and has historically been a better time to accumulate than to panic. Extreme greed appears after strong rallies, when leverage and euphoria are high, and argues for tightening risk rather than adding. It is not a timing tool: markets can stay greedy or fearful for weeks.

How often is the index updated?

Once a day. This page records the reading shortly after 00:00 UTC and keeps 150 days of history so you can see how today compares with the last few weeks and months.

Does the index predict Bitcoin's price?

No. It describes how the market feels now, which is largely a reflection of what price has already done. Its value is in context: the same chart pattern means something different at a reading of 15 than at 85. Combine it with positioning data such as funding rates and open interest before acting on it.
